Every time What We Do in the Shadows airs a season finale, I feel like one of our favorite Staten Island vampires: pouty, belligerent, and ready to bed down in my coffin for an entire week. The frightfully shocking conclusion to Season Four left me in this very same state, but luckily, there’s hope on the horizon: What We Do in the Shadows has already been renewed for Seasons Five and Six. Below, we’re sinking our fangs into everything we know about Season Five.

What Will Happen in Season Five of What We Do in the Shadows?

To guess where the show is going, we need only look at where it’s been. Season Four ended with a classic sitcom reset and a surprisingly melancholy tone. Laszlo and Baby Colin Robinson’s quasi-father/son dynamic came to a crushing conclusion when Colin transformed back into the middle-aged, beige-suited energy vampire we know and love, leaving Laszlo crestfallen for the first time in centuries. Colin may have ended up right back where he started with no memory of his peculiar upbringing by Laszlo, but no doubt this isn’t the last we’ve seen of this arc—it’s bound to have emotional fallout for Laszlo.

Meanwhile, Nadja saw her dreams literally razed to the ground when she burned down her failing nightclub for the insurance money. She learned two important lessons: when pulling off insurance fraud, remove all hidden cash from the premises before you light the match, and also buy some insurance first. For the past two seasons, Nadja has been on a journey of ambition; we’ve seen her take over the local Vampiric Council, ascend to the Worldwide Vampire Council, and achieve her dream of owning a buzzing vampire night club. Now that it’s all in ashes, she’ll have to find a new dream in Season Five. We can expect to see The Guide by her side; during Season Four, their friendship blossomed over witchcraft and Mamma Mia (also, Kristen Schaal has been promoted to series regular). Executive producer Paul Simms hinted that more unexpected pairings like Nadja and The Guide lie ahead, telling Newsweek, "A lot of it is about putting together characters you wouldn't expect to be together. I thought The Guide and Nadja as a team were very funny in the fourth season. Obviously, Laszlo and a child of any kind, much less baby Colin, was really fun. I'm excited about all the characters."

But the biggest shock of the season came in its cliffhanger ending: with Nandor pouting over his failed marriage and once again putting off Guillermo’s transformation into a creature of the night, Guillermo took matters into his own hands, exhorting his buddy Derek to transform him in exchange for a suitcase full of embezzled cash from the nightclub. Simms told Entertainment Tonight, “I think the biggest thing from the finale is Guillermo making such a rash and maybe ill-considered decision. That’s obviously gonna have massive repercussions.”

Simms promises that Season Five will include another episode featuring Guillermo’s family—could they be visiting him post-transformation, perhaps? Whatever happens next, it’s been a long time coming, given that Guillermo has been dreaming about becoming a vampire ever since the first five minutes of the pilot. "But if there’s any consistent theme of this show, it’s probably, “Be careful what you wish for,’" Simms warns. "I mean, it was something that played out literally with Nandor this season, but it’s an overarching team of the show. So, the Guillermo stuff is gonna be really funny."

Speaking of Guillermo—Harvey Guillén shared an update on Season Five, telling ScreenRant that filming is already halfway over. "We just got picked up for Season 5 and 6," Guillėn explained. "We're filming 5 now, and then we definitely have 6 waiting for us. But who knows? The world could end tomorrow. But so far, so good. We're just taking it one season at a time. I can't believe that it's already Season 5, because I was thinking about this... I was shooting last night, and we're halfway done through Season 5 of filming. The time is just going so fast, and it's so great. I can't believe I've been living up here in Toronto on and off for five years now. That's half a decade, you know? Just the idea of that, it's like, 'We just shot the pilot like yesterday. Wasn't Taika [Waititi, co-creator] and Jemaine [Clement, co-creator] just here shooting?'"

When Will What We Do in the Shadows Season Five Air?

No official announcement has been made, but given that the show regularly airs its ten-episode seasons in the summers, we’re hopeful that Season Five will land during Summer 2023. Production has already commenced in Toronto, so now, it’s just a waiting game. Here’s hoping the next year doesn’t feel as long as the vampires’ eternal lives.
