Saddle up, neo-western fans: There's a new show on the horizon!

The first season of Walker Independence premieres today, October 6, and we're more than excited to expand our list of favorite shows like Yellowstone. There's just something about seeing ranchers get into big brawls and concoct clever schemes— all while a love story unfolds—that drives us wild!

But have you ever wondered what it takes to be a brooding on-screen cowboy or cowgirl? Well, if you ask the cast of Walker Independence, it's a whole lot of method acting!

In a virtual panel attended by ThePioneerWoman.com and other publications, the stars of the Walker prequel (which also airs tonight on the CW!) shared their on-screen and off-screen tactics for getting into character.

“I think sometimes you work from the inside out," said Matt Barr (who plays Hoyt Rawlins on the show). "And I think with our show too... the wardrobe, you walk onto our set, which is like this Western town, you know, in New Mexico.

"It's beautiful and... there's horses and there's goats and there's... these beautiful background actors," he added. "And it's like, you've time-traveled back in time. So it's very easy to just walk right into that character."

But Barr made it clear that he doesn't just "turn off" his character when the camera stops rolling. He noted that he tries to eat the same meals, wear the same clothes, and stay in the same mindset as his character even when he's not filming.

If you ask us, getting to dress like a cowboy on and off-screen sounds like an absolute dream job. Sign us up!

As he closed off his statement, Barr made a joke that definitely raised a few eyebrows.

“You know, for years I've been trying to find excuses not to shower as much. So... I’m a method actor now," he quipped.

Well, that's certainly one way to get into character! 😂

Katherine McNamara, who plays Abby Walker, also chimed in and told us about the cowboy camp the cast had to attend before filming.

"Cowboy camp was a lot of fun. You know... I had a very different experience than most of the other guys," McNamara said. "I had to learn how to ride with Justin, with Matt, backwards on a horse with Matt, for the pilot."

Who knew there was a such thing as cowboy camps? You can find us looking for the nearest one during the Walker Independence commercial breaks!

Walker Independence premieres tonight, October 6, on The CW at 9:00 p.m. ET. (Right after Walker, which premieres on the same network at 8:00 p.m. ET.)
