Inside the Home of Dogeared Jewelry Designer, Marcia Maizel-Clarke
You may have seen this home tour floating about, but maybe you haven't... or maybe you need a little refresher of this stunner, originally debuted in 2015. It's timeless in every way possible and that shouldn't come as a surprise, seeing that it's the abode of Marcia Maizel-Clarke, jewelry Designer and Founder of Dogeared. I've been wearing the same Dogeared necklace (my favorite) for exactly three years and it too, is has an ageless beauty like this home. Ready for the full tour? With a daughter in her senior year of high school and a son in college, the Clarkes wanted to make their L.A. home more amenable to entertaining. “The mutual goal was to create a beautiful and inviting environment that provided their family with an entertaining haven,” says Pierson. To that end, they sought a “comfortable sophistication” and focused on the flow of the space, making each common area feel welcoming for “casual gatherings with great friends, great food, and great music,” the designer says.
Though the interior of the house looks remarkably light, it wasn’t always that way, Maizel-Clarke tells us. “We really wanted to bring more light into the space to open it up, so we added skylights to help us achieve that goal.”
The color palette of the home is also quite soft, but Pierson makes a point to tell us “the absence of strong color does not mean the absence of warmth.” The designer brought in warmth with a mix of natural elements and texture, which complemented her base of whites and neutrals.
With indigo textiles, a hanging chair, stools made from tree stumps, tables crafted from recycled tires, and a live-edge wood dining table, the home feels decidedly bohemian. Balanced with modern pieces and restrained accessorizing, it also has a clean, contemporary sophistication.
Much like the designer’s free-spirited, natural jewelry collection, Maizel-Clarke's home is all about good vibes. “Our family and friends’ blessings are all throughout the house,” she says. “There are Dogeared charms and icons in the dirt and foundation, friends and family left notes and writing all over the beams, and prayers and love letters are present in the newly poured cement areas.”
From her carefully curated art selection—much of which she selected with her husband, Merlin—to her meaningful travel souvenirs to inherited family antiques, “the house is full of love.” If that’s not the keystone to any successful design project, we don’t know what is.In true California form, Maizel-Clarke and Pierson embraced the concept of indoor/outdoor living and brought in landscape architect Steve Siegrist—“a master of outdoor spaces,” according to Pierson—to create an outdoor dining room and seating area that felt like “an entertainer’s haven.”
