Joplin miniature donkey auction attracts international attention

JOPLIN, Mo. — If you’re looking for a new pet and want one with a lifespan upwards of 30 years, you may want to consider a miniature donkey.

There are just under 50 of them off West Belle Center Road in Joplin at the GauxPro Performance Horses facility, which is hosting this year’s Breeder’s Classic Miniature Donkey Sale.

The two-day event began Friday and is tabbed as a national event that has also attracted international attention. This includes people who have actually made the trip to Joplin from another country and those participating in the live online auction.

“It’s big, people from all over the world are here and it’s going to be great, people should just come on out and see the donkeys and if they want to buy a couple, you know, bring your check book,” said Robin Irlbeck, Event Organizer.

“It’s very important, it’s crazy, it’s great, it’s that so in Germany,” said Petra Appeldorn, German Breeder.

“A lot of people back home, cause we’re farmers and from a farming area, cattle, sheep, and cropping, a lot of people say, “Why donkeys, they’re useless, what do you do with them? cause it’s like you have to make money from everything, so yeah, I just, it’s just a fun, they’re just lovely, they love people,” said Sarah Hines, Australian Breeder.

The event is free and open to the public. The price for a miniature donkey can range from $800 to $5,000. The sale runs through Saturday, starting at noon. Once again, it is free and open to the public.
