KernBHRS' Family Day set for Saturday at CALM

Gather the family on Saturday and head out to the California Living Museum for Family Day.

Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services will host the signature event in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month.

On Saturday, admission is free to the zoo, allowing visitors a chance to view the animals, walk the grounds and enjoy free rides on the Central Valley Children's Railroad.

In addition to free admission, there will be resource booths and an activity area where visitors can make Mother’s Day cards, work on art easels, color, create woodland creature origami and make fans.

There will also be three sessions of laughing yoga, a Polynesian dance performance and tai chi demonstrations in the amphitheater.

"Spending time with our family and friends is one of the most powerful ways to spread hope and healing in our community," Liz Bailey, Kern BHRS administrator for department supports, said in a news release. "Please come join us in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health by enjoying fun activities including free train rides and, of course, the animals. You will be sure to learn about all of the amazing mental health and substance use services that you can share with anyone who is struggling, we hope to see you all there!"

CALM will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway.

In operation since 1983, CALM is home to more than 40 different species of animals. It showcases California’s native species and promotes the successful rehabilitation of wildlife.

The zoo was recently recognized in Bakersfield Life's annual Best Of Readers’ Choice Poll as the best museum/art gallery and best nonprofit event (for HolidayLights) and a favorite spot for kid/family entertainment.
