Lafayette couple opens up about overcoming drug addiction

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– Chad Landry said his drug addiction has been a slippery slope for him; he said meeting the love of his life, Jennifer Landry, helped him realize there are more important things in life.

“I was afraid to die and leave my wife alone in that situation,” Chad Landry said. “I didn’t want her to have to deal with that kind of pain.”

Chad Landry said he began using crack cocaine and alcohol at the age of 12. He said he used the drug as a way to cope with abuse issues, but unfortunately, it turned into a life of addiction.

“Addiction is very serious,” he said. “It’s very strong in a person’s mind. It’s hard to even explain. It’s almost like powers being powerless over the thought and compulsion.”

Chad Landry said he was in and out of prison for years. He said he never knew if he would be able to recover, until he met the love of his life at a work release facility.

“He went back to prison, and we actually got married while he was in prison,” Jennifer Landry said. “We got married one month before he was set come out. It started off as a friendship and we’ve been together for 14 years.”

When Chad Landry was released from prison, Jennifer Landry said their marriage was put to the test because of his addiction. She said while she received backlash from others for being with her husband, she said she knew in her heart that she loved him no matter what.

“At the end of day I knew that this was somebody that I wanted to be with no matter what,” Jennifer Landry. “I knew inside of him there was the greatest potential ever.”

With some help from his wife and multiple support groups, Chad Landry said he was able to overcome his addiction completely.

“I had enough, so over three years ago, I quit totally from everything,” Chad Landry said.

The Landrys are now both certified life coaches and own the non-profit organization, speaking to inspire through experience, that is focused on motivating the youth. Jennifer Landry said while their relationship is not perfect, they are perfect for each other.

“We’re not perfect,” she said. “We fuss just like any couple, but life without him, I am not ready for it. That’s the love of my life.”

Jennifer Landry said she has written a journal called A Partner’s Journal For Healing A Broken Heart, in hopes that it will help others overcome their addictions.
