The rumors have finally been confirmed and frankly, we are pretty, pretty devastated: Curb Your Enthusiam's upcoming twelfth season will be its last. HBO revealed the news with the release of a new poster featuring Larry David perched on an iceberg, and the, somewhat depressing tagline, "THE LAST OF HIS KIND."

David himself gave a statement further crushing our dreams of a never ending stream of new Curb episodes. "”As CURB comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character," he said. "And so ‘Larry David,’ I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those of you who would like to get in touch with me, you can reach me at Doctors Without Borders." (Somehow I would guess paparazzi shots of David at various Knicks games will still prove to us he's still got a little "Larry David" inside of him.)

Look, 12 seasons is a good long time for a show to run, but somehow Curb defined the odds and never got stale. The most recent batch of episodes, which aired in 2021, brought us some incredible plotlines and new characters, among them the insanely funny wannabe (terrible) actress Maria Sofia Estrada (brilliant newcomer Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and strident city councilwoman Irma Kostroski (the great Tracey Ullman), all of whom landed in Larry's life because someone drowned in his pool. According to the press release, Ullman will be back for season 12. Thank god. Let's hope Mejia is in the mix as well.

David and his crew seemed to have a flawless formula: They would just make a new season whenever they felt like it, which meant that it rarely seemed like they were reaching for storylines. So you can't help but think: Why have they decided to end it for good? Has David just had enough? Does he believe he’s come up with a perfect way to bid farewell to the crankiest man in the world? (The last series finale David wrote was, you may recall, somewhat divisive.) Whatever the reason, we'll be savoring these last few hours with our beloved schmuck.
