Levi’s Scales Use of Transitional Cotton, Plant-Based Indigo

The new Levi’s WellThread collection builds on years of innovation.

The Spring/Summer 2024 men’s and women’s line combines sustainable ingredients such as transitional cotton and plant-based indigo with six relaxed silhouettes, soft-touch sueded ecru denim and barely visible shades of light blue.

For women, the brand offers ’80s mom shorts with a pixelated botanical print made from plant-based indigo ink. The collection also includes the Orchard soft-structured trousers and matching Down to Earth Trucker jacket and a short-sleeve Wildflower denim shift dress in indigo.

For men, Levi’s WellThread offers Stay Loose carpenter pants in a subtle shade of blue and an ecru Stonefield Shirt that can be worn alone or for layering.

The brand said the collection “upholds the WellThread ethos of working to reduce the chemical, energy and water impacts of apparel production.”

“As a platform for innovation and testing, our ultimate goal with WellThread is to learn what’s possible and share the best practices for reducing the impact of product design and manufacturing,” said Paul Dillinger, VP, head of global product innovation at Levi Strauss & Co. “With consistent application of our core design principles, we’re proud to continue our journey of finding new, renewable alternatives like the plant-based pixelated botanical print. Our latest collection features some bright and fresh garments that are timeless, comfortable, and easy to wear.”

All pieces in the collection are made using 100 percent transitional cotton that is on its way to becoming organically certified. Launched in 2020, the Levi’s WellThread Transitional Cotton program works with small shareholder farmers in India as they transition their fields to a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people by using ecological processes, biodiversity and farming cycles adapted to local conditions.

Through the program, Levi’s reduces the farmers’ financial risk during the transition period to organic farming through its commitment to purchasing their transitional cotton crop.
