Liver fistula in dogs is a congenital condition that happens when blood bypasses the liver. Thankfully, the condition is quite uncommon.

Technically, the condition is also known as intrahepatic arteriovenous fistula.

The condition produces a wide range of symptoms. For example, some of the most common symptoms include:

• Diarrhea

• Weight loss

• Ascites

• Peeing more than usual

• Drinking more water than usual

• Jaundice

• Vomiting

• Ulcers

• Stomach pain

• Dementia

The cause of the condition is usually congenital. This means that a dog is born with it.

Additionally, injuries and surgeries can also cause the condition in some cases.

Treatments for Liver Fistula in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about your dog’s full medical history.

Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Blood and urine tests will be taken. Blood clotting and bile acid tests will also be carried out.

Generally, ultrasounds and biopsies can confirm the condition.

Usually, treatment focusses on diet changes. This can involve lowering your dog’s sodium and nitrate intake. Your vet can help formulate healthy diet changes for your dog.

However, in more severe cases, surgery can be needed. Your vet will figure out whether this is the right option for your dog.
