Local summer camp helps kids beat the heat

FALLS TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —   Camps are a great way to keep kids outside and active during the summer months, but with the expected heat wave, one summer camp is getting creative to help keep its campers cool.

It’s a hot, muggy morning at Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Falls Township on Tuesday, the heat already building as the area is expected to see near-record high temperatures this week.

The farm is quiet as the sun rises, but that won’t last long as its Earth summer camp session has already begun.

Heat Alert: How hot will it get in NEPA this week?

“We’re going to keep cool and hydrated and have a great time while kids get a chance to learn about leadership and being in community and kindness and compassion and being their truest selves and building their confidence.”

Keeping water coolers filled and handy for thirsty campers, founder Indra Lahiri says the heat isn’t a worry as they have water activities planned with the animals.

“Alpacas love sprinklers, especially when the weather’s crazy like this, so we’ll be having kids and alpacas play together under sprinklers, as long as the alpacas are willing to share.”

It’s not just campers that need to beat the heat, but also its staff and the animals. That’s why barns have air misters and fans to help keep the cows cool.

Expanding its summer camp also helps adults with unique needs build job readiness skills. Everyone attending gets good old-fashioned outdoor fun with around 200 rescue animals at the sanctuary.

“These animals were rescued from terrible circumstances and now they’re living their fullest lives and we all know we’re going to face tough times, but we too can persevere and be resilient and bounce back.”

Indraloka Animal Sanctuary’s 5-day summer camp is open to kids ages 5 to 14.
