Looking for acai and bistro eats in downtown Hanover? This 2-in-1 eatery hits The Spot

Walking down Chestnut Street in Hanover, you wouldn’t expect to find a spot vibing with soothing neons and somehow-welcoming black walls with a shocking quality of pastries and acai.

Javier Cruz and Natalie Roman, owners of The Spot, noticed that as well, saying, “There was nothing like acai bowls in town.”

A hidden summer favorite to put in your weekday plans, downtown holds The Spot for coffee and the trending super-berry bowls. With The Spot’s recent rebrand, formerly known as “Boriken Bowls,” Javier Cruz and his brother Bryan split their building: Bistro 17331 on the left, The Acai Spot on the right, merging together in quality and taste to be The Spot.

At first glance of the outdoor sign naming the building, you might not expecte two taste experiences in one indoor setting.

“I take care of the acai, and he and his wife wanted to try something new (with Bistro 17331),” Javier said.

Bistro 17331 serves pastries and coffee, along with a lunch menu created by Bryan Cruz and his wife Keira Vega.

The husband-and-wife team married their roots and their Hanover home. “When we moved here to this town, we wanted to bring something like that summer vibe, so we opened this shop,” said Javier. Summer might mean a little bit of stay-cation this year.

Sit in a quiet corner or laugh at the bar, play what you know on the piano, take pictures in the photoset scene.

“They’re going to love it and have a great time here,” said Javier.

Javier Cruz and Natalie Roman said their home city in Puerto Rico inspired the bowls. Natalie desires to bring a piece of what's familiar to their own Caribbean vibe to Hanover year-round.

When asked if he had any notes to the people who haven’t jumped on the trend yet, Javier said people needed to try it. “I think there's something different here than other shops.”

Warm coconut and bright pitaya, acai is not the only frozen flavor that is offered. The menu ranges from bowls to smoothies to fruit-topped toast.

“We have faith and we want to draw a scene to the people,” Javier said.

The Spot, at 8 W. Chestnut St. in Hanover, is open Tuesday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
