MAC Trailer receives a tax credit to expand operations in Alliance area

ALLIANCE − Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announced on Monday the approval of assistance for four projects that will create jobs in Ohio.

One of them will be in the Stark County area.

MAC Trailer Enterprises Inc. is expanding its operations in the Alliance area and plans to create 80 full-time positions, generating $4 million in new annual payroll and retaining $4.5 million in existing payroll, according to the Ohio Department of Development.

Mike Conny, the owner of MAC Trailer and several other area real estate properties, bought the 20-acre former Royal China site in Sebring in 2020. This expansion, the state DOD said, allows MAC Trailer − headquartered in Lexington Township − to increase output on both frameless and framed dump trailers. The Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 1.339%, seven-year tax credit for the project.

MAC Trailer operates three plants in the Alliance area and manufactures dump, platform, pneumatic tanks, liquid tanks, refuse trailers and dump bodies under the MAC Trailer, Trailstar, Beall and MAC LTT brands. The trailers are made at 12 plants across the United States.

Locally, MAC Trailer manufactures end dumps at its facility on Commerce Street in Lexington Township; half rounds, transfers and chippers at its West Main Street plant in Alliance; and platforms and pneumatic tanks at a facility on Allen Road in Salem. It has an aftermarket parts facility on Rockhill Avenue in Alliance.

The company also has a manufacturing plant under the Trailstar brand in Smith Township.

The company, in an email, said it can no longer sustain the demand for MAC Trailer and Trailstar products without an expansion at either one of its Alliance plants or the Smith Township plant. The company said no decision has been made on which plant will be expanded.

MAC Trailer Enterprises employs more than 1,600 people in the U.S., including 1,000 people in Ohio.

"This new addition will not only allow for more trailers to be manufactured, but it will also allow for new good-paying jobs to be created for people in our local community," the company said via email. "Some of the new positions that will be created are welding jobs, forklift operators, office staff employees, engineers and material managers."

MAC also has manufacturing plants in Paton, Iowa; Davis Oklahoma; Haslet, Texas; and Sunnyside, Washington. The company's founder and president is Michael A. Conny.

The TCA OK'd the tax credit during its monthly meeting, along with three others projects within the state. The four projects are expected to add more than $13.4 million in new payroll and create more than $55.6 million in investments across Ohio.

The other three projects receiving assistance are:

• Middle West Spirits LLC in Columbus (Franklin County).

• Berkley Insurance Company in West Chester Twp. (Butler County).

• Cincinnati Test Systems Inc. in Harrison (Hamilton County).
