Mango Made a Gown for the Met Gala 2019—And You Can Actually Shop It

We've come to expect a major fast-fashion moment on the Met Gala red carpet: H&M dressed six celebrities in 2018; Topshop has sent squads of models decked in its designs many times before. In 2019 a new retailer threw its name in the ring—and it's one you probably shop at regularly.

For the first time ever, Mango made an appearance on the Met Gala red carpet. The Spanish high-street brand beloved by Priyanka Chopra, Taylor Swift, and Gigi Hadid chose Sofía Sanchez de Betak, a longtime Mango ambassador, to make its big debut at the event. The best part? Every single element of her look from the first Monday in May is now shoppable.

Sanchez linked up with Mango soon after she got the coveted invite to the Met Gala. The whole process took about two months—from the initial meetings to the fittings at Mango's headquarters in Barcelona to the big day.

"We've been working with [stylist] Mimi Cuttrell. She helped us develop the concept for the dress, on top of having Sofía's input," says Ainhoa San Martin, Mango's PR director. Cuttrell came up with the tongue-in-cheek inspiration for the dress: a mango. (Cuttrell also styled Chopra, both Hadid sisters, and Sara Sampaio for the event.)

It's an "ironic" interpretation of the name of the brand, San Martin says, which then informed the selection of the colors, fabric, and silhouette.

"To be honest, in the beginning, when we spoke about the fruit, we were a bit like, 'Okay…this is going to be challenging,'" San Martin admits. But as they continued to think about it and develop the look, they all agreed it was the best way to move forward, especially given this year's Met Gala "camp" theme.

"We're exaggerating the qualities of the mango, with the dégradé of the colors and the trapeze shape with different layers," she adds. "The handbag that she's wearing is in the shape of a mango. She has really big earrings in the shape of fruit. Everything together ties back to the 'camp' concept."

For the brand, this project went beyond "making a fantastic dress for her to wear that would also be aligned with what we do," says San Martin. It was also about bringing the Mango shopper in on the experience: "It's super important that our clients are able to relate to what we do," says San Martin. That means you'll be able to shop Sanchez's exact dress for yourself.

The brand just released its capsule Gala collection that includes Sanchez's dress and other ready-to-wear options plus accessories (including Sanchez's crystal-encrusted fruit ear cuff and bag). The collection will be available online and at Mango's New York City store. Most pieces are under $130, with the exception of her exact red-carpet dress, which retails for $499.

"For us, it's really important that everything we do reflects the essence of the brand," says San Martin. Mango targets contemporary, feminine shoppers looking for pieces that fit all sorts of occasions, from work to play, she explains. Its collections are vast and varied, but the through line is always the same: "That women feel good when they wear our clothes. That they feel powerful. That they know that they can do anything that they want."
