Marilyn Monroe’s estate has come to the defense of Ana de Armas after backlash to her casting following the Blonde trailer. Despite not being associated with the film, Marilyn’s estate couldn’t disagree more with people criticizing Ana and have thrown their full support behind her performance.

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history,” Marc Rosen, president of the group that owns the Marilyn Monroe estate, told Variety. “Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity, and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

Yes to this.

FYI, much of the backlash to Ana’s performance in the trailer is centered on her Marilyn Monroe accent, which she worked on with a dialect coach for months. The initial backlash has caused some people to point out that American actors do accents all the time without enduring criticism like this and that the dialogue surrounding Ana’s accent is xenophobic.

As Variety notes, Ana told Vanity Fair a few years back, “I only had to audition for Marilyn once and Andrew [Dominik] said ‘It’s you,’ but I had to audition for everyone else. The producers. The money people. I always have people I needed to convince. But I knew I could do it. Playing Marilyn was groundbreaking. A Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe. I wanted it so badly. You see that famous photo of her and she is smiling in the moment, but that’s just a slice of what she was really going through at the time.”

Can’t wait to see Ana’s performance in the film.
