Mid-Continent Public Library brings back ‘Food for Fines’ program

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Mid-Continent Public Library announced the return of its ‘Food for Fines’ program through the week of May 6-12 — an opportunity for customers to pay off fines and fees with donations of nonperishable items.

MCPL offers Food for Fines twice a year. It starts at the beginning of the summer to encourage active participation in the summer reading program and then comes back in the fall to provide better resources for students at the library.

Customers are encouraged to donate even if they don’t have fees or fines. In fact, any extra donations will be used to “pay it forward” toward another customer’s balance, and then all of the items will be given to charities across the metro.

If you are interested in donating, make sure items are not expired, damaged, open or in a glass, plastic or cardboard drink container. Each item will count as $1.50 toward a customer’s fines and fees up to $30.

Some donation items MCPL recommends are boxed meals, canned food, peanut butter, cereal, pasta and more.
