Moment Rescued Cockatoo Starts to Trust His New Mom Is So Special

Adopting a pet can be one of the most fun and rewarding experiences a person can have, but that doesn't mean it's always easy. Any animal needs time to adjust to a new home, but a rescue pet can be even more sensitive and shy. It takes patience to help a new family member thrive!

As one bird rescuer is proving with her October 15 TikTok video, animal adoption goes further than dog and cat shelters. Exotic pets need saving, too! Parrot rescuer @geckoemmy has had Mr. Shelby the Moluccan Cockatoo for about a month, and she recently caught the sweetest bonding moment on film. He's finally coming out of his shell, and he's even talking to her!

What a sweet bird! This pet cockatoo has come a long way on his journey, and we couldn't be more proud to see his rescue transformation. The 32-year-old rescue cockatoo has been in 4 homes throughout the last 2 years, and his beak and nails were majorly overgrown.

"It breaks my heart how many cockatoos are discarded," shared commenter @laney.roo. "As you said, they’re so emotional and intelligent, and I wish I could rescue them all." We know exactly what you mean! Not many people know just how smart and sensitive these birds can be. We'd like to think that if they knew, they'd take much better care of their feathered friends.

Now that Mr. Shelby found Emmy and her independent parrot rescue, though, he's on the mend! The way this rescue bird talked to his owner and hesitantly approached her shows that he's realizing that he's safe, and we can't wait to see how he'll feel when he's fully adjusted.
