A Mountain Lion Wandered into a Couple’s Home...and Got Trapped in Their Bathroom
It's not every day that an intruder enters into your home unannounced—and it's definitely not every day that that intruder just so happens to be a wild animal (we hope!). Unfortunately, for one couple in California, this was exactly the case when a mountain lion sauntered into their home one night.
On Sunday night, a mountain lion made its way into Edward and Kathy Sudduth's home through the front door—which had been left open—while they were relaxing for the night.
“We were just watching television and then all of a sudden, we heard a big bang,” homeowner Edward Sudduth, 84, said to KTXL.
The couple believes that their intruder was chasing a neighbor's cat, which found shelter in their living room. When the mountain lion entered, they thought it was just a huge dog—it even ran into Kathy.
“His tail was pretty close to me so I just ‘thwipped’ it a little bit like that,” Edward told the news station.
The mountain lion got so close to Edward and Kathy that it quickly became frightened and ran into the bathroom—locking itself in by accident.
“911 had a hard time understanding what I was talking about because I probably was jabbering a lot,” Edward said.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife and members of Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office came to the scene, broke the bathroom window, and coaxed the animal out of the home.
"He did get a stern warning about the break-in before being released," the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office joked on Facebook about the intruder.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office has some advice for those that come in contact with mountain lions: "If you do encounter a mountain lion here are some helpful safety tips: make noise, act defiant and not afraid, maintain eye contact, never run away, slowly create distance, and fight back if you’re attacked!"
The couple joked that they "won't be leaving the door open anymore"—good choice!
