The day is dedicated to simply uniting the city through music, offering local artists to perform at various spots around the city regardless of their experience, age or status. Artists performed all day long at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and other nearby locations.

Partnering with the Huntsville Hospital Music Therapy program, the events throughout the day also aimed to educate community members on the impact music can have.

Music therapy addresses a range of needs through songwriting, playing instruments, singing, and so forth. Music makes different connections in the brain than simply talking, making it an effective therapy program. Any patient in the Huntsville Hospital can request music therapy just by asking their nurse.

“Music therapy is a unique field,” music therapist Kate Winn said. “A lot of times, it’s less threatening than a traditional counseling session. But, we are able to incorporate some counseling techniques into our session. So, especially for anybody with mental health issues, we can address that with music therapy.”

Winn goes on to add that is also effective for speech impediments of any kind, and simply relaxing a patient during their time in the hospital.
