Oregon Ski Resort Limits Operations Due To 100mph Gusts

Mt. Bachelor in Oregon is currently under a storm hold, and the lifts are going to be delayed continuing today as the blizzard continues to bless Oregon skiers with fresh pow.

Officials of Mt. Bachelor posted an update to Instagram: "Here is a small glimpse into the blizzard mid-mountain, shot by our Patrol and Lift Maintenance teams."

"The storm hit hard this morning with 100mph gusts on Northwest Express, chairs blanketed in thick rime ice, and non-stop heavy snowfall which is expected to continue through tomorrow."

"We do not expect to open any additional lifts today. Stay tuned for more updates on conditions and operations."

Mt. Bachelor saw 6 inches overnight, 9 inches in the last 24 hours, and 14 inches in the last 48 hours.

Specifically, nearing 4pm yesterday, officials at Bachelor reported that "We received 18" since 2am this morning and heavy snowfall is expected to continue through the night and into tomorrow, with the forecast projecting multiple feet of accumulation and winds in the 40-65mph range."

"We expect to have limited operations and delays again tomorrow, with the goal of opening the same lifts we had spinning today: Rainbow, Alpenglow, Early Riser, Sunrise, Little Pine and Red Chair. Teams will be working to get Skyliner and Pine Marten de-iced as conditions allow, but both will start the day on hold. Outback and Cloudchaser will remain closed."

Importantly, "Please note that ALL UPHILL ROUTES WILL BE CLOSED starting now until lifts open tomorrow. For the safety of our guests and employees, please adhere to these closures. This includes the Cinder Cone route."

The danger is not limited to the mountain. "Driving conditions will be extreme, take public transportation when possible and be prepared for deep snow on roads and in parking lots."

Safe to say there are powder turns to be had as soon as the lift resumes normal operations.

According to the lift reports and a mountain update, officials at Mt. Bachelor advised that visitors should "expect lift delays and limited operations, 1/9-1/10, due to extreme winds, heavy snowfall and icing."

"Beware: with deep snow comes increased risk of tree wells, avalanches, and snow immersion suffocation."

How does the saying go, when it snows it dumps?

Better to play it safe and get out there with high visibility instead of getting stuck in a tree well!
