Pennsylvania's Largest Ski Resort Announces Opening Day

Blue Mountain Resort, Pennsylvania—home to the state's largest vertical terrain offering—has announced that December 2nd is its new anticipated opening day.

Faced with warm temperatures, Blue Mountain has been forced to push its anticipated opening day further and further into the future. Earlier this month, the resort targeted November 24th before less-than-optimal snowmaking conditions led to a change in trajectory.

The current forecast calls for temperatures in the high 30s and mid-40s this week at Blue Mountain, which could present a challenge to snowmaking operations depending on the air moisture.

Snowmakers rely on wet-bulb temperature forecasts—a combination of air temperature and moisture—instead of standard temperature readings. Dry air bodes well for snowmaking operations.

Weather concerns aside, Blue Mountain's webcams show consistent coverage—a positive sign for the resort's anticipated opening day of December 2nd.

As is the case at other Eastern resorts, Blue Mountain relies heavily on its extensive snowmaking system to create skiable conditions. This season, the resort is adding 74 TechnoAlpin Stick Guns and 26 TechnoAlpin Fan Guns, expanding its capacity by 30%.

In an announcement detailing the snowmaking upgrade, Blue Mountain wrote, "Your favorite trails like Razor's Edge, Lazy Mile, and Falls will open earlier than ever before."

Fingers crossed the weather conditions line up for Blue Mountain in the coming days—here at POWDER, we're rooting for you.
