People Are Heartbroken Over How Long Sweet Shelter Dogs Have Waited for Their Forever Homes
It's no secret by now that animal shelters across the country (and around the world) are facing unprecedented overcrowding and underfunding. From county-run humane societies to non-profit rescues, everyone is being hit hard.
The incredible volunteers at @mostlymuttsga also have their hands full with dozens of adorable dogs. This animal shelter in Kennesaw, Georgia, posted a heart-wrenching TikTok video on August 12 showing how long some of their canine residents have been there and it's stirring up quite a reaction. These dogs are so ready to find homes!

If we could adopt every single one of these dogs, we would! They all seem like good girls and boys, and they deserve to curl up in a comfy spot all their own--just like any dog. We have no doubt that the volunteers at Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue do everything they can to keep their four-legged guests happy and healthy, but it doesn't compare to having homes of their very own.
It's fun to see all of the dogs' differences and everything that makes them unique because it shows us that there really is a shelter dog for anyone out there. There are puppies, adult dogs, senior dogs, and even bonded pairs! Some dogs enjoy hiking with an owner, while others would prefer to be left alone while they nap. You can find a little bit of everything at the shelter!
Of course, some dogs find it easier to get adopted than others. For example, small dogs and younger dogs are almost always selected over their larger or older counterparts. This can be part of the reason why some canines spend so long in the shelter.
Commenter @foxiikat asked, "why is Nitro there so long?" That's a good question, and likely not a simple answer. This 12-year-old has been in the shelter for about five years! He was adopted previously and showed some resource guarding, but he was unfortunately returned to the shelter instead of given training and time. As Mostly Mutts explains on his profile, he's a smart and happy dog when given time, attention, and a bit of guidance.
In fact, most dogs do exceptionally well when in the ideal environment! Rescue dogs will always need time to adjust, but before long they'll be right at home. This is exactly what we wish for for the dogs at Mostly Mutts!
