In what a Buckingham Palace spokesperson called a "happy development," Queen Elizabeth joined her youngest son, Prince Edward, to open the completed Elizabeth train line at Paddington Station in London.

The Queen wore an all-yellow outfit, complete with a yellow hat that had blue flowers. Using a walking stick, she unveiled a plaque for the Elizabeth line at Paddington Station.

She was given an oyster card, the card used to pay for public transport in London, and shown how to use the machine.

"We're all incredibly touched and moved and grateful to Her Majesty for coming to open the Elizabeth line today," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, per BBC. "It was fantastic to see her."

The Elizabeth line was set to open in 2018, but was delayed by issues with "safety testing and signaling systems," according to Reuters. Due to the Queen's ongoing mobility issues, there was no expectation she would be in attendance for the opening, and her son, Prince Edward, was prepared to step in on his mother's behalf.

Yet, "the organizers were informed of the possibility she may attend," Buckingham Palace said.

But the Queen did appear, walking with just the assist of a cane—marking her third public appearance in under a week, perhaps signaling a more consistent return to public events ahead of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations next month.

This past weekend, she made two surprise appearances at the Royal Windsor Horse Show to watch her granddaughter Lady Louise compete and to watch the "A Gallop Through History" performance.
