A New "Riverdale" Spin-Off About Katy Keene Is Coming to the CW
Get ready Riverdale fans, because there's great news for those who can't get enough of the show's blue-lipped, mysterious masked-figure drama. Following the recent debut of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — a Riverdale spin-off that airs on Netflix — a second Riverdale spin-off has been announced.
Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the exciting — and musical — news on Twitter, writing, "The #Riverdale universe expands! Thrilled to be bringing the adventures of Katy Keene and her New York pals to life! Extra-thrilled to be doing this with my pal Michael Grassi @thatthingofwhen!" According to The Hollywood Reporter, this newest addition to the Riverdale universe will focus on Katy Keene, an aspiring entertainer.
Per THR, the show, which will air on the CW, will focus on Katy and three of her "iconic Archie Comics" friends. Those characters could include Gloria Grandbilt (historically, a rival of Katy's), Lucki Lorelei, K.O. Kelly (one of Katy's boyfriends), and Katy's comic-book sister, Sis.
Three other characters joining the series haven't yet been confirmed, but the showrunners shared that it will be a "musical dramedy" centered on the friends trying to make their dreams come true in the Big Apple.
It hasn't yet been revealed whether any of our fave Riverdale characters will appear on the new series, but as the Sabrina debut has shown, the show's creators know how to hide a few references in the intertwined worlds. And, as past casting news — Kiernan Shipka as Betty Cooper, anyone?! — has demonstrated, it's possible some of our Riverdale faves have even been considered for this project.
A premiere date for the new series has not been announced, but in the meantime, fans have plenty of Riverdale fun to hold them over. The CW just announced that it has another musical episode planned for the show; and on Netflix, Sabrina was renewed for two more chapters that will begin airing later this year.
