CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Some homes and businesses throughout Central Illinois have experienced air conditioning outages this week during high temperatures. HVAC professionals shared some ways to prevent an outage so you can stay cool this summer.

Following these tips regularly can protect your A/C from an outage:

  • Keep thermostats above 70 degrees

  • Keep vents open

  • Check for water leaks

One air conditioning contractor says the most important thing is always keeping an eye on filters.

“A lot of times they get dirty and that can suffocate the air conditioning unit,” said Cody Haas of Dogtown Heating & Air. “Outside, a lot of times when people mow or it gets windy throughout the year, it’ll coat the coils. Hosing that off and keeping those clean, those two things right there are huge.”

It is suggested filters get replaced at least once a month to keep the system running efficiently.
