'Stir Crazy' Shelter Dog in Hawaii Is Thriving After a Game-Changing Field Trip

As much as I wish I could give every single shelter dog the loving and dedicated home they deserve, the harsh reality is that not every dog reaches that dream. Some shelter pets have a harder time engaging potential adopters for a myriad of reasons, and some of these dogs end up never going home.

Fortunately, there are many shelter workers and volunteers who are determined to help animals find homes. Some of those folks work at the Hawaiian Humane Society near Honolulu, and they spotted a special long-term resident who needed some extra TLC.

Katie had been in the shelter for 99 days when something clicked. The 'stir crazy' behavior that made adopters overlook her completely changed when she got the chance to go on a field trip and get out of the kennel!

Aww--go, Katie! She is living her best life on her hike with shelter volunteers, and the smile on her face says it all. She seemed happy and confident the entire time, whether she was riding in the car or taking a dip in the creek. Clearly, this high-energy dog was meant to be someone's adventure buddy!

Although this gorgeous Pit Bull exhibits many stressed-out behaviors like barking, jumping, and even pawing at the kennel, her rescuers knew that this high-energy girl just needed some time outside of the shelter. Even calm dogs can get stir-crazy after a few weeks in the shelter, so Katie is doing pretty darn great after 99 whole days.

The more enrichment and exercise she can get, the easier her adoption process will go. This Hawaiian field trip proved that she's a friendly, easygoing girl who can walk on a leash and does well in a car, but she'll still need lots of attention, exercise, and time as she adjusts to a new home.

If Katie has caught your eye, you can visit her at the @hawaiianhumane's Mōʻiliʻili campus in Honolulu.
