Stylist and fashion blogger shares tips on how to style a silky midi skirt: ‘Needed this fr’

Considering its year-round appeal and ability to be dressed both up and down, it’s no surprise that the midi skirt has long been a staple in every “it” girl’s wardrobe. Yet, for a piece so versatile, why do many of us feel as if this skirt is incredibly difficult to style?

Thankfully, Kim J Brannigan (@styledbykimkj), a Washington, D.C., stylist and fashion blogger on TikTok who frequently shares styling tips — like how to properly wear burgundy tights — recently gave pointers on how to effortlessly rock a silky midi skirt.

Brannigan’s first tip? In terms of footwear, avoid wearing ankle boots that leave a gap below the bottom of the skirt. Instead, she suggests, go for a cute pair of slingback heels or slim knee-high boots. If, however, you’re not in the mood for some height, Brannigan recommends a “really delicate and slim flat.”

“I tend to avoid a really chunky sneaker or boot,” she adds.

As for tops, Brannigan says that when she tucks anything in, she always adds a belt. For sweaters, she never tucks the bottom into her bra. Instead, if the sweater isn’t too thick, she’ll “slightly” tuck it into her belt. Alternatively, Brannigan suggests reaching for a sweater with a tighter waistband to avoid tucking at all. Pairing a silky midi skirt with a cardigan is also a great option.

In a previous video posted on Sept. 5, Brannigan revealed that when pairing a cardigan with a midi skirt, she keeps “the bottom buttons undone” to give more definition at the waist. When opting for cropped blazers or jackets, she suggests reaching for ones that hit right about the waist.

“If you wanna go longer, just make sure it doesn’t hit you at the widest part of your body,” she cautions.

Are midi skirts still wearable during cooler months?

Brannigan recently spoke to In The Know by Yahoo about the transitional appeal of a midi skirt. With autumn well underway, she sees no reason to stop reaching for the staple garment even in the cooler months.

“I think a midi skirt is perfect for colder months. I love pairing it with a slim pair of knee high boots,” she shared via email. “When it comes to choosing a shoe with a midi skirt, I always advise to avoid an ankle boot that creates a gap between the bottom of the midi skirt and the top of the boot. A sweater also pairs very well with a midi skirt, and I love to add a belt.”

Generally, Brannigan explained, her tips for styling silky midi skirts can be applied to skirts of varying textures too. Structured fabrics are the only ones that differ slightly in pairing them with other pieces.

“The only difference would be with a midi skirt that has more structure, such as a leather or denim midi skirt. With these textures, you are able to tuck in your top much more easily without needing a belt to avoid the bulk under a silky midi skirt,” she added.

Many creators have taken to Brannigan’s comments to thank her for the styling tips, as well as commend her for the number of outfits she managed to create with just one core piece.

“The amount of outfits you just whipped out with this skirt?! I’m obsessed,” @mckennakirkpatrick wrote in response to her video.

“This was soooo helpful! I’ve wanted a silk skirt for years but never knew how to wear it. so many options,” @kevwemowarin also replied.

“Needed this fr,” @thejamiebarfoot commented.
