Sunday is National Detroit-style Pizza Day: Where to find deals
Sunday — June 23 — is National Detroit-style Pizza Day.
The day, celebrating the square pizza with the crispy, lacey cheese edges, was first created in 2021 by local chain Buddy's Pizza to mark its 75th anniversary.
The following year, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer honored the day with a proclamation deeming June 23 National Detroit-Style Pizza Day in Michigan.
Since 2011, June 23 has also been known as Buddy's Pizza Day, named by then-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

Detroit-style pizza deals
On Sunday, Buddy's customers will receive a voucher for a free 4-square, 1-topping pizza with a $10 purchase. The offer is valid for all dine-in, carryout and online orders and while supplies last.
Sterling Heights-based Jet's Pizza, which has been around since 1978, also celebrates Detroit-Style Pizza Day with a special promotion. When you order online and use the code DSP24, you'll save 20% off all menu-priced pizzas.
What is Detroit-style pizza?
A Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pie with, depending on the place, the toppings on top or under the sauce. And the sauce has its special place, too; it is dolloped on top or drizzled in lines across the top.
But the hallmark, signature designation and delicious fame of Detroit-style pizza lies in its crispy and crunchy edges. The crispiness comes from the cheese that caramelizes along the sides and edges as the pan it's cooked in.
At Buddy's Pizza, the story goes that it uses square steel pans that were originally used in the automotive industry. Those square steel pans take well to high heat, become seasoned over time and also are a conductor for creating that crispy and caramelized crust.
