Sunshine and socializing: Classic car and bike show comes to the Wayne County Care Center

As the golden years of life unfold, relaxation, contentment and fulfillment become increasingly important, and Wayne County Care Center Activities Director Sarah Koval tirelessly works to provide exciting activities for each of the 44 care center residents.

As a testament to her commitment, Koval recently organized a car and bike show. The event not only brought joy to the residents, but also raised funds for a future field trip.

“Some of our residents can’t afford to go on our field trips,” Koval said. “Fundraisers like this allow them to take part in our activities like going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We visited it last year, and everyone loved it.”

Koval and her staff routinely take residents to restaurants, movies and hair salons, and they are grateful for the many volunteers who help make the events successful.

“I have never worked at a facility with this many wonderful volunteers,” Koval said. “I can’t say enough about the Women’s Auxiliary and the people that helped out today. We are seeing a lot of giving from the people who brought cars in.”

Getting out is good for physical and mental health

Aside from seeing the excitement on resident’s faces, Koval, a Certified Dementia Practitioner, knows the benefit of spending time outdoors.

“Many of the residents came out of their rooms today; the weather is perfect,” she said. “Vitamin D from the sun does amazing things for older adults. Socializing is a big part of life, but vitamins are also important, and today, we can get outside and socialize. They love this.”

Koval also loves hearing feedback from the residents. “After the events, they will tell me how much fun they had,” she continued. “And they are curious about what is next.”

One of the social aspects the Wayne County Care Center prides itself on is the dedicated staff members’ determination to provide something of interest to each resident.

Koval said a few residents enjoy puzzles, so they established a puzzle room where they could socialize and piece together puzzles.
