Surfer Dies After Stabbing on New South Wales Beach

Police have launched a murder investigation in Coffs Harbour after a surfer was found with “significant stab wounds” in a beachside parking lot. They believe the 22-year-old man had just finished a surf session moments earlier at a spot known as “Parkie” and was leaving the water when he was stabbed and eventually found in the Park Beach Reserve around 6:40 a.m. Thursday.

The young man was found with severe stab wounds to the neck and chest and first responders were immediately called to the scene. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries.

“It’s really out of the ordinary. I’ve never seen any physical contact in the water and I’ve been surfing here for 35 years now,” Lee Winkler, a former Championship Tour vet and Coffs Harbour local told The Guardian. Winkler described the beach as a peaceful, family friendly area. “I’ve never seen anything like this, never. The surf club is full of lots of kids doing ocean skills and meeting friends and it’s really shocking.”

“We believe he recently came out of the surf and was wearing a black wetsuit at the time,” Chief Inspector Detective Guy Flaherty told local media after the incident. “We’ve identified some items of interest in and around the Jetty area,” he added. “At this stage we believe that the parties may not have known each other.”

Police were still searching for the attacker at the time of publication.
