In preparation for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympic games, the Olympic flame has been touring France’s overseas territories. The latest stop was French Polynesia, the site of the Olympic surfing event at Teahupo’o, Tahiti.

After initially making its way through mainland France for a month, this is the torch’s third stop in its tour of the French overseas territories, which started with French Guiana and La Réunion. As Olympics.com reports, the torch was carried by Tahitian surfer Vahine Fierro, before being passed on to her coach, Hira Teriinatoofa. Other watermen and women to carry the flame were para-surfer Toareia Bordes, local bodyboard champion Amy Tauria and Prisca Amaru, the founder of Moorea’s first surfing school. Tahitian surfer and fellow member of the French Olympic team Kauli Vaast was also in attendance. The ceremony ended with Tahitian surfer and 2020 Olympian Michel Bourez lighting a ceremonial cauldron in Place To’ata, Papeete.
