When I was about 12 or 13 years old—around the time girls were getting Bat Mitzvah'd—it seemed like every teenager and their mother had a David Yurman bracelet around their wrist. You know what I am talking about: the sterling silver cuff that looks like a twisted cable and is flanked with gold and colorful gemstones. How can you not recognize it?

I remember I had wanted one so badly, but because I had been wearing traditional Middle Eastern gold bangles since I was toddler, it just never really panned out. To this day, as I near 30, the David Yurman cable bracelet continues to be something I think about a lot. So, when I heard the brand was gearing up to launch an updated version of the iconic bracelet, I made sure I finally got my hands one after all these years.

As the story goes, the eponymous designer first created his signature sculpted bracelet for his then-girlfriend, now-wife, Sybil, over 50 years ago. Inspired by ancient jewelry in the MET and the cables used to suspend the Brooklyn Bridge, he hand twisted the bracelet with 50 feet of wire and embellished the end caps with pink tourmalines and emeralds. By 1983, the first cable bracelet was introduced... and the rest is history.

The newest version of the cuff, now called the Cable Flex, bears all the trimmings of the original. Made of sterling silver with 14-karat gold, it has the recognizable twisted helix design and sculpted look but now boasts Cablespira technology, which allows the piece to bend and flex specifically to your wrist shape. The modernized iteration also appears to be more simplified, using less wires, and is designed with a brighter silver finish, a wider, cable wrap, and updated end caps in a rainbow of gems.

Upon receiving it, I was fully expecting the piece to feel weighty and heavy, but I was actually quite surprised at how lightweight it is. I definitely feel it on my wrist, but the bracelet certainly doesn't weigh it down. I also love how subtle yet impactful it appears. I am not someone who likes attention or to stick out, especially when it comes to the things I wear. This bracelet is minimalist but it's intricately designed in such a way so that people do double takes and make notice of it. I quite love the touch of gold on the end cap, too. I wasn't sure how it was going to look next to my gold bangle, but it offers the perfect balance of mixed metals.
