A Texas Oil Tycoon Is Selling His San Antonio Penthouse for $3.3 Million

The first thing you’ll notice about this two-story Texas penthouse are the views and, second, the current owner’s trove of WWII plane memorabilia. Rod Lewis, the billionaire founder and CEO of Lewis Energy Group, is parting ways with his condo perched atop The Arts Residences in downtown San Antonio. On the market for just shy of $3.3 million with Haley Rodriguez of Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty, the palatial pad measures 3,850 square feet and is decked out with floor-to-ceiling walls of glass that look over the city toward the Texas Hill Country. Altogether, the aerie has two bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a balcony on each floor, and a privately gated three-car garage.

“Penthouses are few and far between in San Antonio,” Rodriguez told Mansion Global. “This is the only two-story north-facing condo with 270-degree views at the Arts Residences.”

The penthouse features Venetian plaster walls, Murano glass chandeliers, and bespoke brass cabinetry.

The 20-story high-rise was completed in 2020, and the penthouse crowns the top of the Thompson San Antonio Hotel. Lewis, who grew up in Texas as the son of an Air Force pilot, said he was drawn in by the development’s rarity and options for customization. “Privacy and exclusivity enticed me with this condo—with 59 units, this building has the smallest number of condos in a luxury high rise in San Antonio,” Lewis told the listing site. “I enjoy building and remodeling, so having the chance to purchase a special condo and change it to fit my needs before it was built was very intriguing.”

The oil magnate also has an obvious passion for collecting. In addition to owning a fleet of WWII aircraft, Lewis’s affinity for aviation memorabilia extends to the artwork in the apartment, including a wallpaper mural of one of his planes, Glacier Girl, a P-38 Lightning that was salvaged after being buried under 268 feet of Greenland ice for 50 years.

There are floor-to-ceiling windows that frame 20-mile views over the city to the Texas Hill Country.

On the condo’s first floor, you’ll find the main living spaces, which feel super dramatic and moody thanks to lots of elegant Murano chandeliers and shimmering brass-accented cabinets. Elsewhere, this level holds an ensuite guest room. The primary suite is located upstairs, along with a lounge and a study. Of course, residents of the building will have access to plenty of perks. Some of the standout amenities include an on-site spa, room service, and a 24-hour concierge.

Since the pandemic, there’s been plenty of movement to Texas, with out-of-towners flocking to the Lone Star State in droves. More recently, Drake decided to put down roots and scooped up a $15 million ranch outside of Houston. Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone but You star Glen Powell also just returned to his native Austin.
