Things to do in San Diego the first weekend of summer

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The first weekend of summer 2024 has officially arrived, meaning there’s fun to be had in the San Diego sun.

From food festivals to live music and all things in-between, here are some things to do across the region to welcome the new season:

Lao Food Festival

Returning for a second year this weekend, this festival celebrates the diverse and rich cuisine of Laos. It will be held at Mira Mesa Community Park, where festivalgoers can gain some insight into the history of Lao food while sampling bites around the park. There will also be live music and entertainment, as well as cooking contests and live demos throughout the weekend.

Arts District Summer Music Series

Head to the North Promenade in Liberty Station Sunday with friends and family to enjoy live musical performances. don’t forget to bring a blanket or some lawn chairs to set you in the grass. Tulengua, a bilingual musical group, is set to perform from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event is free to attend.

Scoop San Diego Ice Cream

Just in time for summer, the best ice cream and gelato shops in San Diego are joining forces this weekend to scoop for a good cause at this festival in North Park. Over 25 business are expected to participate. There will also be interactive exhibits and activities for those of all ages. Proceeds from the event will go to the Berry Good Food Foundation to fund garden projects in local elementary schools.

San Diego County Fair

Heading to the Del Mar Fairgrounds is a classic way to spend the first weekend of summer. Try all the new and unique food options and, of course, the thrilling rides. Tickets to the fair start at $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and children age 6 to 12. For those looking for Friday night plans, Kings of Late Night: Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson and Arsenio Hall are all set to perform.
