Three Americans Have Died Under Mysterious Circumstances at the Same Resort in the Dominican Republic
Over the course of just five days, three Americans died while staying at two adjacent resort properties in the Dominican Republic.
On May 25, Miranda Schaup-Werner, a 41-year-old woman from Pennsylvania who was on vacation with her husband, collapsed suddenly, not long after checking in to the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana, report CNN and WFMZ.
"At one point, she was sitting there happily, smiling and taking pictures, and the next moment she was in acute pain and called out for Dan [her husband], and she collapsed," family spokesperson Jay McDonald told CNN.
The paramedics were called, and they tried to revive her, but Schaup-Werner died in her room.
Less than a week later, on May 30, a Maryland couple, Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, were found dead in their room at a different hotel, the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville, which the Washington Post reports is part of the same resort. Holmes and Day appeared to have suffered from respiratory failure.
"The bizarre issue of the same hotel and these things happening within days of each other and the complete unexpected nature of what happened to Miranda," McDonald said. "We just want to understand this."
Local police are currently investigating all three deaths, and are awaiting toxicology reports. According to The New York Times, "The Regional Institute of Forensic Sciences said further tests are required to determine more about the cause of death."
