Trader Joe's Shoppers Were 'Devastated' When This Treat Left Shelves—But Now It's Back

And at $3.79, it's “time for a run!”

Some food and drink flavor profiles translate well into ice cream. Cookies and Cream? A brilliant recreation of an Oreo cookie. Caramel Macchiato? Sweet coffee in frozen form. Carrot Cake? Maybe not as obvious, but we can imagine it.

Another ice cream flavor we can imagine? Horchata.

What Is Horchata?

Horchata is a popular Latin American drink usually made with rice or nuts, dairy or non-dairy milk, a sweetener, and cinnamon, although there are many variations. The resulting beverage is creamy, milky, sweet, and cinnamony. It sounds like a good combination for an ice cream flavor, right? Trader Joe’s thinks so, too.

But Trader Joe’s doesn’t offer this ice cream flavor year-round. Two years ago, when it disappeared from the freezer section, there was a Reddit thread dedicated to how “devasted” one mom’s kids were. “Seriously,” she wrote, “it’s like the end of the world in my house right now,” and helpful Redditers suggested alternatives. But she no longer needs an alternative, at least for now.

The ice cream was recently spotted at Trader Joe’s, and Instagram’s trader_joes_treasure_hunt has photographic evidence to prove it.

Trader Joe’s Horchata Ice Cream

Trader Joe’s describes its limited-time Horchata Ice Cream as having a base of cream, milk, egg yolks, and cane sugar that’s been “horchatized” by adding cinnamon, brown rice flour, a touch of sea salt, and pieces of horchata-flavored cookies.

When trader_joes_treasure_hunt posted about the ice cream, saying, “Get ready for a Trader Joe’s run because Horchata ice cream is back in stores! Creamy, sweet, cinnamon rice ice cream with horchata cookie pieces. Delicious!!” the account’s followers were almost unanimously excited.

Comments ranged from “This is the BESTTTTT!!!” to “Omg!! I’m soooo happy!!! Loved this!” to a simple “So good!”

Like other Trader Joe’s summer treats, such as Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream, it won’t be around forever, maybe not even until the end of the summer. So, if the thought of a creamy bowl of Horchata ice cream to cool you off sounds appealing, it's “time for a run!!”
