I tried all of Disneyland's Halloween foods while I was on my period and ranked them

Spending the day at Disneyland doesn’t just mean riding It’s A Small World over and over or picking up a brand-new pair of embroidered Mickey ears, it also means eating all of the foods. The Disney park is as famous for its treats as much as its attractions. There’s the iconic Disneyland churro, the heavenly Dole Whip, and that stomach growl-inducing Monte Cristo sandwich. It’s a place for serious foodies, and Halloween at Disneyland is especially glorious. There are so many new and different things to eat at the park that aren’t offered the rest of the year.

Aside from being a beauty editor, I’m also a food blogger, but my culinary interests are focused on something quite particular—I write and create recipes based on period foods, aka the cheesy, carby, sweet, and salty things we crave during our moon cycle. While I’m sure it’s healthier to eat iron-rich foods while shedding our uterine lining, a kale salad doesn’t sound as enticing as a big-ass amusement park corn dog. Going to Disneyland to taste-test some of its Halloween foods while I was on my rag sounded like the practical thing to do.

Here, 10 Halloween-themed foods I tried at Disneyland while on my period, ranked from “no thanks, ma’am” to “can I have seconds, please?”

10Musubi Special

Where: Bengal Barbecue, Adventureland, Disneyland
The lowdown: Spam Musubi with lemongrass jasmine rice and pineapple teriyaki sauce. It also comes with a side of pickled daikon and carrots, topped with furikake flakes.
Period review: Full disclaimer: On the rare occasion I eat Spam, I prefer Spamsilog, a Filipino breakfast dish. It has crispy Spam, fried rice (sinangag), and a fried egg (itlog). But I was up for trying some musubi during my day at the park. Bad decision. This rice was too cold, stiff, and a little bit soggy. I didn’t taste the lemongrass. Unfortunately, my period was not happy with this life choice.

9Slow-Burnin’ Mac and Cheese Cone

Where: Cozy Cone Motel, Cars Land, California Adventure
The lowdown: Macaroni noodles with spicy red pepper cheese sauce, topped with crushed chile-cheese puffs and served in a black bread cone.
Period review: I’m a mac and cheese connoisseur, so this was the food I was most excited to try. Of course, according to Murphy’s Law (or, when related to food, is it Guy Fieri’s Law?), it was also the longest line I had to wait in. Reader, I was so goddamn disappointed. While it was warm and cozy, it was basically glorified movie theater nacho cheese. Yes, that sounds delicious at first, but I was hoping it would have some higher quality queso. Also, the cone was too soft and had no flavor. Aesthetically, it looked goth AF, like a satanic mac and cheese (which I’m definitely into) so I’ll give it props for that. I’m sure other people would love this, but not this cheese snob.

8Fire Dragon Tacos

Where: Studio Catering Company, Hollywood Land, California Adventure
The lowdown: Pork belly tacos with kimchi slaw, Korean BBQ sauce, and Sriracha crema.
Period review: At this point, I was so hungry I ended up ordering these tacos and a regular option from the menu (which I really couldn’t pass up because they were called The Most Dangerous Tacos in the Galaxy). These were okay. The flavor was pretty good, but the pork belly was a little tough. They might be better on a different day, but I wouldn’t get them again. The “Dangerous” tacos were better, tbh.

7Maleficent Crispy Treat

Where: Candy Palace, Main Street, U.S.A., Disneyland
The lowdown: A rice crispy treat that looks like the most glamorous Disney villain.
Period review: I love me an old-school rice crispy treat, so I couldn’t pass on one of these cool-looking treats. It was pre-made so it was a bit dry, but still yummy.

6Pumpkin Spice Beignets

Where: Mint Julep Bar, New Orleans Square, Disneyland
The lowdown: Mickey-shaped beignets with pumpkin spice flavor.
Period review: Disneyland foodies love the regular Mickey beignets, and I do too. They’re made fresh daily and feel as soft as a cloud. These are pretty much the same, except with a hint of pumpkin spice. I couldn’t really taste the pumpkin; it was more a barely-heard whisper than a hint. However, since the beignets themselves are still deliciously soft, light, and airy, I didn’t mind too much.

5Mummy Marshmallow

Where: Candy Palace, Main Street, U.S.A., Disneyland
The lowdown: A white chocolate-covered marshmallow on a stick.
Period review: I never think about eating just marshmallow, unless we’re glamping in the woods and roasting them on sticks. I chose this treat because it was too freakin’ cute, but the white fudge covering the marshmallow was actually super tasty. I was pleasantly surprised.

4Pumpkin Spice Churro

Where: Near Haunted Mansion, New Orleans Square, Disneyland
The lowdown: Pumpkin spice-flavored churro with cream cheese frosting dip.
Period review: First of all, you can’t go wrong with churros at Disneyland. Where the pumpkin spice beignets had only a faint seasonal flavor, these made up for it. This is definitely a must for a pumpkin spice fan. Sweet-toothed bleeders only: After one bite, I felt the sugar pulsing in my veins.

3Graveyard Cupcake

Where: Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe, Main Street, U.S.A., Disneyland
The lowdown: A chocolate cupcake with cherry filling, dark chocolate mousse, and Halloween sprinkles, topped with a chocolate tombstone.
Period review: The photo I took of this was blurry (probably because I was in such a rush to eat it), so it’s a good thing people are photographing it like paparazzi on the ‘gram. And it’s no wonder they are, because it was delicious. This was one of the desserts I was most excited to try, and I’m not usually a big chocolate person. But when I’m a menstruating goddess, I do cave in to the stereotypical chocolate craving. I wish this cupcake were around all year.

2Halloween Hot Dog

Where: Refreshment Corner, Main Street, U.S.A., Disneyland
The lowdown: A hot dog with spicy meatballs, cheese sauce, topped with oven-roasted tomatoes.
Period review: The photo might not be the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen, but if you’re a meat-eater and especially crave it on your period like me, this is a must. All I want to do when Dame Flo is in town is eat is a big ol’ hot diggity dog. And you get double the meat with this menu item. Delicious meatballs sit on top of the beef, all wrapped up in a soft, fluffy bun. I know I’ll be craving this bad boy again.

1Frozen Abuelita Horchata

Where: Rancho del Zocalo, Frontierland, Disneyland
The lowdown: Frozen Mexican hot chocolate layered with frozen horchata, topped with orange-spiced whipped cream.
Period review: Again, this photo doesn’t do justice. When I was handed this horchata, I gave a side-eye to that orange whipped cream. Couldn’t they have put in a little more elbow grease when squirting that whip on top? However, when I took a sip, I had to eat my words. This was so heavenly, I couldn’t believe my tastebuds. The combination of frozen hot chocolate with horchata is an absolute dream, and it had the perfect balance of cinnamon and pumpkin. I might have to finally become a Disneyland annual passholder.
