We tried Graeter's new mystery pack. It nearly tore us apart
Graeter's Ice Cream recently released a new, mysterious spring offering, to which we used our investigative journalism skills to uncover the secret.
The popular local ice cream chain released its latest creation, the Mystery Tasting Pack, last month, available exclusively online for $84.95 while supplies last.
According to a press release, the limited-edition pack allows ice cream lovers to engage in a blind-tasting experience with "six never-before-seen flavors" made in small 2 ½-gallon batches in the brand's classic French pots.
In addition to the six unique pints of ice cream, each pack also comes with pint number tags, scorecards and instructions for conducting a blind tasting. The pints have been carefully wrapped to keep the flavors a secret, but the names of the mystery flavors can be found on the inside of the lid.
We set out to determine the flavors of the Graeter's Mystery Tasting Pack. Here's what we learned.
What are the flavors in the Graeter's Mystery Tasting Pack?
We put six tasters to the test to see if they could identify the flavors in the mystery six-pack. We laughed, we argued, we reminisced and we wasted an entire box of plastic spoons. But which flavors stood out the most?
In the end, it was the second flavor that had us the most captivated and confused.
Dubbed "Ocean Floor Surprise" by entertainment editor Rasputin Todd, this flavor consisted of a pink strawberry ice cream with small neon green chunks that were hard to pin down. Some said they were sour. Others said they were salty. The one thing we could agree on was that the flavor was unique and worth a couple of extra bites.
Then there was the "Cinnamon Toast Crunch Blankety Blank," name courtesy of trending news editor David Wysong. Though most liked this flavor, it did remind Todd and trending reporter Grace Tucker of a Yankee Candle. Luckily, I reminded them it's OK to be wrong.
Then, there was my personal favorite, a banana cream pie concoction. The banana ice cream tasted natural and not artificial, gaining many points among the group. It also featured whole vanilla wafers, which left us digging to the bottom of the pint for the decadent topping.
In addition to these standout flavors, the other three pints included a citrusy sorbet, a chocolate-covered raspberry and a pineapple upside-down cake-inspired flavor.
