TV Loving Tabby Cat Has Bespoke Armchair for Her Precious Screentime

My friend has a dog (a Border Collie mix) who loves to watch TV. Her favorite programs are ones that have dogs in it. She was very much into the Dire Wolves on Game of Thrones (not a fan of the dragons, though). My own pets have never seemed to care much for television, though my cats watch plenty of “cat TV”—by which I mean the birds fluttering around outside our windows.

But many cats do indeed take to television. There are entire “channels” on YouTube and other streamers that purport to create cat-friendly programming, like videos of birds or other fast, flitting objects. And to look at the cat in this clip, it’s clearly working.

The feline in this video enjoys watching TV so much, her family has even gotten her her own little armchair from which to do it. Her human documents all of the adorableness on the Instagram page ellawatchestv_.

Some of the cat’s favorite programming includes Bubble Guppies, Pixar shorts like “For the Birds” and other bright, quick animated options.

Why Do Some Cats Watch TV?

Cats watch TV for the same reason they like to watch bouncing feather teasers or flicking bits of string. The little predators are drawn to fast, flickering movement of tiny objects—which is something that most TV shows have in abundance. It literally reminds them of prey. This is especially relevant when the screen is showing small creatures like birds and mice.

It’s curious however, that my cats will watch the birds outside the window for hours at a time, but show no interest in “bird programming” on my TV screen. In each case, they know they cannot reach the animals on the other side of the fat glass (or screen). Maybe my cats have something different in their vision where the lighted screen is not registering for them, or maybe they are smart enough to realize that nothing on screen is “real” whereas those birds on the patio could be theirs, if only Mommy will open the door.

Yeah, I’m going with that one.

Little Chairs for Cats

I’m also enamored of the little armchair upon which Ella sits. The cat-loving world has made an entire industry out of the hunt for little mini furniture pieces for their furry friends. A few years ago, everyone was going gaga over a tiny IKEA armchair meant for kids. This past spring, Aldi fans everywhere were crowing about a miniature pet sofa they tracked down in the “Aisle of Shame.”

Even the Red Heart yarn company, famous among grandmas everywhere, released a free pattern for a crocheted cat couch, complete with “granny square afghan” details, in case you want your cat furniture to look like it came right out of your grandparents’ living room.

(Full disclosure: I crocheted this particular cat couch. My cats promptly ignored it and made their bed in an old Amazon box. Because: cats.)

This is why, as cute as these various bits of mini furniture are, I am not eager to take another plunge and buy something. Because although it’s clear that Ella adores her bespoke armchair and watching TV, my cats apparently only like cardboard boxes and watching birds out the window.
