UCLA gymnasts stun on 'Essence' cover with natural hairstyles and gorgeous gowns: ‘Beautiful brown magic’

Four UCLA gymnasts that have captivated social media look like pure Black girl magic on the cover of Essence.

On Thursday, the publication debuted the digital cover for their Girls United subsidiary which featured gymnastic stand-outs Chae Campbell, 19, Nia Dennis, 22, Margzetta Frazier, 21, and Sekai Wright, 20. In the main photo, the women donned beautiful natural hairstyles and stunning gowns.

"GET INTO THIS! The UCLA Gymnasts are gracing the digital cover of ESSENCE Girls United serving fashion, hair, and melanin magic. The viral athletes are flipping the culture and inspiring girls everywhere," the caption read in part.

Countless fans took to the comments to share their praise for the cover stars.

"AWESOME..Beautiful brown magic!!!" One person wrote.

"Beautiful," someone said.

"Love this cover," a user continued.

"I love this so much," a fan added.

The four athletes shared their thoughts about what it meant to them to represent and inspire Black girls, who have historically not been represented in the sport. Campbell, 19, noted that she grew up in gymnastics not seeing people that looked like her.

“I was the only one in my group that looked how I looked," she recalled. "Having more representation and seeing people thrive, not just Black gymnasts, but also other races and ethnicities, is really encouraging for the young girls out there.”

Wright added, “We do our best to stay positive because we know what we’re representing. As young Black women, it’s so satisfying that we can express and elevate our culture through our gymnastics.”

Dennis, who went viral for her Beyonce-inspired floor routine in January, noted that she also wanted to inspire expression.

“My main goal was to inspire people to do what they love and to have fun and be their most authentic self. So if we have done that in any way, then I would definitely say that the goal has been accomplished,” she said.
