Every small town was selected by a panel of USA Today experts and voted on by readers. To qualify, each town must have an established population under 25,000 residents.

Ludington was named the nation’s best “historic small town,” beating out Abilene, Kansas, and Wickford, Rhode Island.

“Building its economy on the lumber industry, Ludington continued to thrive as a shipping port, both by water and train. Today, visitors come to explore Ludington’s small-town charm, take advantage of its waterfront location for swimming, boating and more, and shop at its many specialty shops and art galleries,” the review read.

Saugatuck was named the nation’s second-best “small coastal town,” finishing only behind Stuart, Florida.

“This lakeside destination is home to award-winning beaches, spas, breweries, art galleries, and so much more,” the review read. “Whether you’re looking for a wedding venue or a romantic place to renew vows, want to enjoy a fun wine tasting, or take an unforgettable family vacation with plenty of outdoor time, Saugatuck has it all.”

Marquette finished fifth as the nation’s best “small-town cultural scene.” Traverse City finished eighth as the nation’s best “small-town food scene” and eighth as the nation’s best small town in the Midwest. Petoskey was named the fourth-best small town in the Midwest.
