USA Today readers say this beach is Michigan’s best

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — USA Today readers believe Michigan’s best beach is in Manistee.

The national newspaper published their survey results Wednesday. An expert panel nominated the “must-visit” beaches across the state and let readers vote on their favorites.

West Michigan is well represented on the list — Lake Michigan has eight of Michigan’s 10 best beaches according to the list. But a northern Michigan beach took the top spot.

First Street Beach in Manistee was named the favorite, with “its wide, sandy expanse, mellow waves, and family friendly atmosphere.” Stearns Park Beach in Ludington finished second and St. Joseph’s Silver Beach County Park was third.

Lake Superior’s lone representative made the list at No. 4, Hunter’s Point Park in Copper Harbor. And Lake Huron made the cut at No. 9 with Tawas Point State Park.

Outside of Sleeping Bear Dunes at No. 10, the rest of the list is Pure (West) Michigan:

South Haven’s South Beach came in at No. 5, for its beautiful views, playground and Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible beach.

Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon was sixth, credited as a great spot for families and a popular stop for kite boarders and paddle boarders.

The “soft sandy shores” of Saugatuck’s Oval Beach was No. 7, noted for its “breathtaking scenery” and “natural beauty.”

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon came in at No. 8 with its 3 miles of shoreline and the dune overlook trail that provides a long panoramic view of the dunes and Lake Michigan.
