And she distilled her signature style down to a single word.

Vanessa Hudgens didn't let a little bit of unexpected drizzle keep her down. After making an appearance during New York Fashion Week in the front row at Michael Kors ("That was really my first step into fall, with that butterscotch 'fit." she said of the cape-and-dress combo.), the actress and paranormal investigator was back in California to for a special event in the usually sunny Newport Beach. For the occasion, which was part of Fashion Island's StyleWeekOC, Hudgens wore a black-and-white Missoni outfit (a bodysuit and skirt that looked like a sleek body-con sheath upon first glance) with a huge, oversized leather jacket worn off her shoulders — and both elements were in line with Hudgens's fall mood.

"I'm such a sucker for the fall color palette," she told InStyle of how she shifts her fashion vibe from summer to fall — and in Vanessa's world, that means going from the breezy, airy Coachella-ready outfits to getting knee-deep into spooky season. "A lot of black gets introduced into the mix. I just painted my nails matte black today, which makes me really happy."

When asked about her approach to getting dressed for fall and any other time of year, Hudgens didn't have to think long about exactly how she thinks about what to wear. In fact, she summed it up into one word: effortless.

"I would say effortless," she says. "It's all about that effortless ease. As I've gotten older and as I've refined my own personal style, the more consistent it's become."

But that doesn't mean that she's not excited to try new things — and even mentioned that ballet flats, one of the upcoming season's breakout trends, could be sneaking into her rotation even though they seem to go against her usual fashion M.O.

"My favorite trend right now is ballet flats," Hudgens mentioned during her Fashion Fireside Chat alongside WWD's Ryma Chikhoune. "Which is wild, because my fiancé is six-four. I'm a mere five-two. And so I'm always wearing platforms around him."

Of course, with the upcoming holiday and Hudgens's well-known affection for all things scary and Halloween, she assured fans that she's already embracing the vibes that come with pumpkin spice, the thinning of the veil, and everyone dreaming up costumes for Halloween.

"The decorations go up almost immediately," she said of when she starts to prep for Halloween. "End of August, they're up. For me, it's about the season itself. It's about the memories that you get to make with your friends and loved ones and the spooks you get to experience."

Hudgens also gave a shoutout to her brand-new partnership with TikTok Shop, where fans of her Caliwater can snag its latest release before anyone else.

"We launched our newest flavor, Pineapple, exclusively with TikTok Shop, which is so cool. I find myself falling down a rabbit hole with TikTok," she said. And even Hudgens isn't immune to the almost scarily accurate algorithm, saying that, of course, her FYP is full of exactly what you'd think. "I get targeted with all the Halloween gear."
