From Town & Country

At this Monday's Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, the cameras briefly took their focus off of the year's two laureates, Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, to document another guest of note: international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

That day, Clooney took a moment to speak to the Nobel Prize organization about the importance of her friend Murad's work in particular. Both Mukwege and Murad were awarded the Prize "for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict."

Here's what Clooney had to say:

"When I met Nadia about three years ago, I never thought I would see a day like this. But it’s extremely moving, and at a time when so many women’s voices around the world are being silenced, it means a lot to have a voice like Nadia’s be heard so loudly.

I think giving her this prize sends a message to all women who’ve been victims of sexual abuse that they should not feel ashamed of coming forward, that their voices cannot be ignored, and that those who abuse them have to be held to account. It’s been far too long that there’s been this battle against impunity.

Today, we celebrate the 70-year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Genocide Convention, but there’s still a long way to go. But I think today we have a moment to recognize the extraordinary courage shown by these two individuals, and I really look forward to seeing the amazing work that these two laureates will go on to do."
