As surfers, it's easy to get caught up in the BS of surfing.

Griping about kooks and bad sessions. Spending hard-earned cash on boards we don't really need. Debating whether Kelly Slater has lost his mojo or not. We forget what it's all about—our relationship with the ocean.

The new edit below by Dave Rastovich and Lauren Hill explores surfers' connection to the sea while reminding us that it needs our help. In the film, the couple travels to "Australia's most protected marine playgrounds" and shows us "what happens when we get it right."

Patagonia captioned its latest edit above:

“All of life – each breath, every sip – is an inheritance from those who came before.” Like many Australian families, the ocean is where Lauren L. Hill and Dave Rastovich’s family connect – through surf and play.

"Just a few generations ago, the ocean was considered too big to fail. Now with so many threats, the ocean seems too big to fix. In search of solutions, Lauren and her family travel to Lord Howe Island Marine Park, one of Australia's most protected marine sanctuaries.

"KIN is a story of the ocean, love and connection. It’s about the world we’ve inherited, the choices we can make, and what it looks like when we get things right."

The film was made as part of Patagonia's “Protect Our Oceans” campaign, which "calls on the Australian government to restore protection to the Coral Sea Marine Park, fully protect 30 per cent of Australia’s ocean by 2030, and prioritise First Nations stewardship of Sea Country."

The initiative was inspired by the Australian government's 2018 decision to downsize Australia's protected marine ecosystems by "more than 1,000,000 square kilometers, opening huge areas to offshore oil and gas and to destructive bottom trawling." It was the single greatest downgrade of a protected area in world history.
