Zelienople library planning June events

ZELIENOPLE ― Expect the unexpected at the Zelienople Area Public Library. We have lots of experiences that you might not expect from a library. Below are just a few of our upcoming special events. Check out our website, www.zelienoplelibrary.org, and our Facebook page for information on our regular programs.

“Coasters and Corndogs: the History of Amusement Parks in Western PA" with Steve Cicero, The History Hobo, will be presented at the library at 7 p.m. June 17. Amusement Parks. How did these iconic places from our childhood come into being? Why did so many, such as Alameda Park, Luna Park and West View, disappear? How do the survivors, like Kennywood and Idlewild, remain relevant in the modern world of cable television and smartphones?  Find out at this free program for all ages.

Ibeji Drum Ensemble will perform at a free event hosted by the library at 7 p.m. June 18 at the Zelienople Community Park’s Ayers Amphitheater. Come enjoy this group of drummers and dancers and learn about West African culture. Sure to be an enjoyable program for all ages. In case of significant rainfall, the event will be at the library.

Ready, Set, Roll! The 2024 Zelienople Bed Derby is June 27. All you need is a team of five and a bed designed to speed through the course. Businesses, corporations, churches, and families are all allowed to participate. Registration for a team is $30. All proceeds benefit the library. Register your team and see the rules and requirements for your bed at https://runsignup.com/zeliebedderby. Race time is scheduled for 6:30 pm with a display of beds before the race. Vote for your favorite in the “Best Decorated” category. Come out and watch teams of five with decorated beds navigate obstacles and try for the fastest time.

Adventure Begins at the Library this summer with our all-ages summer reading challenge! Stop by to sign up and grab your forms or register online beginning June 1. The program officially starts June 10 and runs until Aug. 10.
