2 Durham police officers attacked after crowd forms during woman’s arrest

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Two Durham officers were injured in an attack after a crowd formed during the arrest of a woman Sunday night, police said.

The incident began when police responded to a theft call just before 10:30 p.m. at a business in the 100 block of West Cornwallis Road, according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect, who was a woman. Police tried to detain the woman, however, she took off running north along West Cornwallis Road, the news release said.

Police then chased the woman, running behind her.

“The foot pursuit continued until the suspect fell in the 200 block of West Cornwallis Road,” officers said in the release. The woman was then handcuffed by police.

But at that point “a crowd began to form,” officers said.

One member of the crowd struck one of the officers on the head and bit his arm. A second officer was also struck in the head.

Keyontae Ragland, 22, was arrested in the attack on both officers, police said.

Ragland and the woman theft suspect were both taken to a nearby hospital to be checked.

Ragland was charged with assault inflicting injury on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, and resisting a public officer.

After Ragland was released from the hospital, he was taken to the Durham County Jail with no bond. Charges against the female suspect in the larceny are still pending.
