A motorcyclist was badly hurt and his passenger was killed Monday night after the bike crashed into the back of a car near Newport, Delaware State Police said.

Troopers were called to Route 4 (East Newport Pike) just after 9 p.m. for reports of the wreck. There, they found the 32-year-old driver of the motorcycle and his 28-year-old passenger, both from Wilmington, ejected.

The men were rushed to the hospital, where the younger one died. Police will release his name once family has been notified.

According to police, the driver of a Toyota Yaris was in the left lane of Route 4, passing Curtis Avenue, when the driver of the Kawasaki motorcycle zoomed up behind the 19-year-old woman.

The front of the bike hit the back of the woman's car. Police said the motorcyclist was driving "at an apparent high rate of speed."
