2 injured after fire, explosion at FPL facility in Indiantown

INDIANTOWN — Two Florida Power & Light Co. workers were injured Thursday after a fire and explosion at the FPL facility on Southwest Warfield Boulevard, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.

Fire crews went to the Martin Power Plant in the 21900 block of Southwest Warfield Boulevard shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a fire. Smoke was coming from a turbine at the property.

“The smoke apparently ceased and two FPL workers began working to repair the turbine,” Fire Rescue stated on social media. “At some point, an explosion occurred and the FPL workers were injured.”

One of the workers sustained serious injuries and was flown via helicopter to a hospital, while the other sustained minor injuries.

“One of our firefighters helped pull the two workers to safety and suffered minor injuries in the process,” fire rescue stated. “He was taken to a local hospital.”

Fire rescue in a 10:39 p.m. Thursday post stated the fire was extinguished.

FPL spokesperson Chris McGrath issued this statement via e-mail:

“We are aware of the serious incident Thursday night at FPL’s power plant in Indiantown that injured two of our employees. We are working closely with first responders in Martin County and are unable to provide additional information.”

McGrath did not respond to questions regarding the cause of the fire/explosion, whether it was considered an accident or the result of foul play or how it impacted operations at the facility.

No other information was available Friday.
