2 new koalas arrive at Louisville Zoo for indefinite stay

Two new koala bears have made their way to the Louisville Zoo from California, according to a news release.

The koala bears, 2-year-old Dharuk and 4-year-old Telowie, arrived from the San Diego Zoo and will stay indefinitely as part of an agreement with the Australian government, according to the release.

Dharuk and Telowie now reside at the foot of Glacier Run in a renovated habitat near Lorikeet Landing that previously housed snowy owls and red pandas.

Telowie is a 4-year-old koala bear being transported from the San Diego Zoo to the Louisville Zoo in June. He will reside there indefinitely as part of an agreement with the Australian government.

Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney previously worked at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia and is excited to bring koalas back to Louisville, which were temporarily featured during the 1980s and again in the early 2000s.

“Koalas are fantastic ambassadors for Australia, representing a truly unique species,” Maloney said. “I am excited to see families experience our friends from the ‘Land Down Under’!”

The koalas will undergo a 30-day quarantine before being housed separately in their exhibit.
