2 year-old girl fighting for her life after 6 people shot in 2 Durham shootings

Durham police are investigating two overnight shootings that injured six people, including a 2-year-old girl and a woman who both have “life-threatening injuries.”

In the first shooting, officers responded at 8:14 p.m. Thursday to a report of a gunshot wound in the 1400 block of East Cornwallis Road.

They found a man, woman and a 2-year old girl who had been shot. The three were taken to the hospital. The girl had life-threatening injuries, according to police. The adults had less severe injuries.

The woman is the girl’s 19-year-old mother, and the pair were visiting the teen’s boyfriend at Campus Crossings at Durham Apartments when someone fired into their car, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.

The second shooting, about 3 miles away, occurred at the intersection of Fayetteville Street and Linwood Avenue early Friday morning.

Officers responded at 3:27 a.m. to a reported gunshot wound and found two men and a woman who had been shot.

The three were taken to the hospital, the woman with life-threatening injuries and the men with less severe injuries.

Shootings on the rise

The number of people shot this year in Durham is up sharply compared to the same time last year, police statistics show.

A 3-year-old boy shot June 10 on Fayetteville Street, about 10 minutes from where the girl was shot Thursday, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police declined this week to update his condition and have announced no arrests or suspects.

As of June 8, 112 people had been shot in Durham, up from 76 people by the same time in 2023 and 104 people in 2022, according to police statistics.

Nineteen of those shot this year have died, compared to 18 by the same time in 2023 and 17 in 2022, the statistics show.

Eighteen of the 104 people shot this year have been 17 or younger. Eleven of those shot this year have been 15 or younger.

Shooting increase ‘shocking’

In May, Police Chief Patrice Andrews warned the Durham City Council that the second-quarter crime report would be dire compared to the first three months of the year, when shootings were slightly down from the same time in 2023.

“The second-quarter report is probably going to be astonishing,” Andrews told reporters outside the meeting. “We have gone from like six, seven homicides, to now we’re at 18 within almost a month and a half. That is shocking.”
